HDD went KAPUT!!

Date July 8, 2007

My 80GB external HDD has just decided to go dead on me. What’s inside? 60GB worth of important files and collections.

Anybody has a solution?

If Windows can still see the harddisk, then you can try repairing it using “chkdsk” at the command prompt (Start - Run - cmd). If not, could be a few things, for example the connection cable (USB?) may be faulty.

    Good luck man!

Turns out the cable that I used is faulty. Weird, I always thought all USB cables are the same (as long they have the right jack). Guess they’re not…

I guess the problem was just a faulty cable then? Anyway, thought I’d shared this info. I’ve read some article in the past that putting the harddisk into the freezer for a few hours and it works for a little while after that. Load it up as a slave and transfer important data over. Don’t boot it up though.

I’ve never tried it before. So, do more research before anyone plans to use this trick. ;-)

Into the freezer? Hmm.. logically, the first thing that came out in my mind is won’t it cause some kind of condensation? Which may cause water to get into the HDD, and make it worse?

I’ve googled it up and found a few interesting article:

    1) Freeze your hard drive to recover data: Myth or reality?
    2) Hard disk recovery - the freezer trick.

They used a zipper bag to seal the HDD so water don’t get into it. I’ve read some other article in the past suggesting you not boot the PC up with the broken HDD. Instead, run it on slave and transfer the data out later. That way, the HDD don’t get heated up faster due to booting up.

Having said that, I haven’t personally tried this myself (and I wish my HDD don’t fail on me for me to try it).

fair enough. thanks for the tips :) this time my HDD is saved without having to spend some time in the freezer. next time it failed, i’ll make sure i freeze the hell out of it BWUAHAHAHAHA
