Because you are entitled to have a rest

Date August 26, 2007

Chinese people are known for their extreme hard working. They work pretty much 24/7, that’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is said that because of this habit, they succeed, well, so told. Good principal it seems, but only up to a certain point.

Here in Indonesia, we don’t normally have the luxury of having both Saturday and Sunday off. With the exception of big, global companies, and some companies in bigger cities like Jakarta and Surabaya, most business open 6 days a week. Of course, shopping mall is a whole different case.

Having my own (well, technically speaking) company, of course, I can’t simply work like some office worker. Some of them could just let their mind off work when the clock shows 5 o’clock in the afternoon. I need to plan, tryout, testing products, and some more, way after the working hours. Of course, this does not happen every day, there are days when I could just rest my mind off after business hours. More on this later.

For the past few weeks though, I’ve noticed that I’m running out of time to manage my life and pleasure. My life is getting rather messy. Bad time management? Maybe. Too much work load? Maybe. I found that it’s hard to divide my time properly. I often feel that there are too many things going on my head at the same time. Things like planning for what’s going to happen tomorrow, setting my client’s priorities, planning client’s maintenance, invoices, providing and looking for solutions to my client’s problem, designing promotional items, product testing and knowledge, and some more. As on the personal side, I read blogs on day to day basis (I’ve got heaps), I search forums for new knowledge and discussions, my paid-per-post blogging jobs (2 of them now), my own personal blog, and another commercial blog (that I’ve been having no time to set up yet), and of course, once in awhile, relaxing my sanity by playing games once in awhile.

Back to the main topic, I believe that everyone is entitled for a day off, and for us Indonesian, that would be Sunday. One day where I don’t have to think about work, and catch up with my own, personal activities. I believe that work with no rest is suicidal. I believe that everyone is entitled to their day off. Even a business owner.

Tell me what you think in comments. If you got any time management tips, do tell.

Everyone should have a day off but it is different when you are the boss - your head is constantly being filled with ideas and stresses.

A few ideas that you can try: turn off your phone, discipline yourself to not touch the computer, and the rest is willpower to not think about your business. The last one you have to train for it. ;)

True, being the owner of the business, I can’t simply stop working even when it’s after office hours. Btw, FYI, the business is a partnership between me and my dad.
I can’t really turn off my phone because its my personal number as well. Not touching the computer is not a bad idea, as the willpower not to think about your business, THIS is what I’ve got to practice. Any tips on time management?

Yea I noe my bank acc balance has been increasing vastly. However, I’m not talking about “not wanting to work”. I’m talking that even a hard working person is entitled, and should have, a day off. You’ve seen what too much stress can do to a person. Not pretty :)

Like mooi said, we have to adjust and free our own free time, nyonk. I tried to schedule my blog post and everything else now, to me, whiteboard helps too, as I can keep track on what I have to do next without having to remember too much (and it works surprisingly well)

here in Singapore I have no freakin day off. When I was working, there was one time I gotta be up at Sunday until 5.30 AM in the morning to finish the work. Hell.

I wanna go back Indonesia. Things are much relaxed there. Really.

Spore is hell for worker huh? I kinda knew that it’s a lot harsher up there. Anyway, don’t you agree though? that in working, we do need a rest sometimes? I reckon work without proper rest is humanly wrong haha
